Growing up, Montreal and Vancouver were the cities to visit in Canada. They were the Canadian cities with culture, scenery, and an atmosphere perfect for weekend visitors. Toronto was just another large urban city. Period. I don't know when it happened, but at some point, like many North American cities that are emerging with a new personality, Toronto became cool. And cool it is.
Toronto is often compared to as the Canadian New York City. And in a lot of ways it is. It is a smaller, cleaner, friendlier version of New York City. It has the large sky scrapers, its waterfront skyline, its quirky Brooklyn-like neighborhoods, and the many different ethnic enclaves offering some of the best food. In fact, Toronto is one of the world's most multi-ethnic cities.
I went for a Girls' Weekend during the summer and instantly fell in love with this city. If you haven't been, put it on your Bucket List...now.

A friend who lives in Toronto took us out on his sailboat. We sailed around Toronto Island, swam in Lake Ontario, docked on the island and had a BBQ while watching the sunset. Even if you don't have friends with boats, take the ferry over to Toronto Island.
For Saturday breakfast, head to St. Lawrence Market. Shop around and pick up some bagels, sandwiches, or Portuguese egg custards.
The Distillery District is just East of St. Lawrence Market where you can find shops, restaurants and cafes. Stop at Soma Chocolatemakers and pick up some chocolate products while having an intense shot of chocolate.
If you are a hockey fan like me, you'll enjoy stopping at the Hockey Hall of Fame where you can view the Stanley Cup among other hockey icons.
Queen St. is a little bit Brooklyn. Quirky shops, cute coffee places. Walk along the street until you find Graffiti Alley. For a bite to eat, stop at Bahn Mi Boys and make sure to order the duck confit bahn mi.
On Sunday, head to Kensington Market. NU Bügel has wood fire baked bagels with some of the best bagel sandwiches.
The Cocktail Bar at the Black Hoof has a great patio to have drinks at night. The cocktails are even better. Compliment your drinks with some oysters and smoked olives. The Bellwoods Brewery is an airy open space with communal tables and excellent food.
