The last time I visited the Christmas markets in Hungary was in 2008. The main market in Vörösmarty Square was small, but cute. Nothing compared to Vienna. Fast forward to 2015 and all has changed. The two main markets are now Vörösmarty Square extending all the way down to Deak Ferenc Square and then over to the Basilica. The markets are original and unique selling handcrafted artisans including handmade leather bags, homemade chocolate, and of course stalls of traditional Hungarian food and wine.
Making a stop in Vienna, we were disappointed by how commercialized and manufactured the markets now looked compared to the ones in Budapest. While they are still beautiful in Vienna, if you have to choose between Vienna and Budapest, choose Budapest.
